This is a video in our disCOVER series: where we speak to disability experts, activists and researchers to learn more about challenging disabling society. In this video we interview Simo Vehmas from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland whose recent work has connected disability studies and philosophical study. Amongst the many issues discussed, Simo makes a case for wheeling back from disability studies to ask questions about the foundations upon which much disability studies theory are based.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of the British Academy's Overseas Conference grant which partly funded our trip to NNDR 2011 Iceland, where this interview took place.

Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) offers disability studies teaching and research at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the academic departments of Education, English, Law, Psychology, Social Change and Sociology.

Critical disability studies at our university aim to understand and challenge exclusionary and oppressive practices associated with disablism and consider the ways these intersect with other forms of marginalisation including hetero/sexism, racism, poverty and imperialism.
